Dear Hend, I greatly admire your work and your courage, as you know. I think the defensive reactions here to your opinions about the oppressive side of religion speak to most people’s fear of criticizing anything that has great political power. We hate not to be loved. And being true to one’s own sense of what is good and just for most people takes courage, regardless of critics. You love what is fair and just, in Islam, as I love what the New Testament teaches about love, forgiveness, and righteous behavior. Others can see what you have said about religion at this site. I would love to do a long documentary about you and Haifaa and how you have stayed true to your visions, coming from traditional veils. http://www.hendrixproductions.com/Hendrix_Productions/Veils_%26_Visions.html

Hated the way you portrayed how women are treated in Saudi, which personally I feel it’s not true at all..
I’ve visited Saudi several times since the 80’s, and each time I just feel amazed of the Saudi girls..
Even though they live in a conservative country, they are intelligent, beautiful, good mothers and wives, and educated ladies..
I made a huge search about Saudis, and also about anti Saudis, but it’s just clear how you and those “anti-” focus only on the negative side..
If what you say about the women in your country is true, how could you yourself move to Cairo to study in 1981, and it has to be rarely at that time for a lady to do that??
Around the world, females and males have their issues that need to be solved, but there is always the good side that can’t be hidden
You have to remember that people aren’t yet in heavens to have a perfect life, and that’s why there are the ups and the downs..
I really feel bad for the good men and their female relatives for hiding the fact about them in the Media from people like you..
Have a nice day,
Candle

You are an artiste. No wander, because you are from a talented family. The first talented one was your father. (may his soul rest in peace)

I disagree with the last comment. I think looking at yourself is inseparable from looking into your religion, culture and everything that makes you. I also think that when you are secure in your belief you don’t get worked up when someone attacks it. Religions always need critical assessments now and then. Other wise they get rotten.

Is it time you abandon your blasphemy and sacrileges of Islamic faith and pay attention to yourself? If you would just listen to your breath and look around you closely for clues, perhaps then you would discover your very existence and leave Islam and its holy book alone.
I wish you good luck.

Wow, you are awesome!!! I love your henna art and your architectural stuff. Your blog entries about Scheherazade and Shehrayar are really insightful and fun to read. And the Arabic calligraphy is cool too – Arabic is one of my favorite languages even though I don’t speak it, though I know some of the alphabet.

I just wanted to tell you that your art moved me somehow..
I had this rush of feelings when I saw some of your drawings “women of Arabia” and i totally get the idea and what you are going through.
Art is this thing that has a strong affect on you, that talks to you without saying words and I sure think that you have achieved that.
God Bless you..

Yet another phenomenal woman from my country! even though I might disagree with some of your statements and/or messages in your work, i can’t help but admire the wonderful talent and respect the strong confident female that never turned her back to her own country or changed her skin. God bless you and i hope to see you and your work in Jeddah soon.
