Shahadah – 2017
Shahada reinterprets the Islamic declaration of faith through freehand Arabic calligraphy and a vivid, contemporary visual field. The central phrase—affirming the oneness of God and the prophethood of Muhammad—is rendered in improvised script, breaking from traditional calligraphic rules to emphasize personal gesture and spiritual immediacy. Surrounding it, henna-inspired floral motifs on the right and multi-shade ribbon forms on the left create a near‑psychedelic sensory intensity.
The background adapts the woven pattern of the Saudi men’s headdress—an emblem of authority—recolored to harmonize with the work’s purples and pinks, folding a male-coded motif into a composition shaped by women’s ornamentation and personal spiritual expression.
