Green in The Suq, Red in Mother's Hand
Fist Of Night Fist Of Day
It is a riddle.
It goes like this: What is Green in the Suq and red in your mother's hand? The answer is "Henna." I made a research in my home town of Al-Hasa, Saudi arabia about old styles of henna. Modernily in Al-Hasa, first looked down upon henna then celebrated it again but with indiviudualized and improvised forms which were inspired by worldwide traditions. The old forms almost gone. I found eight specific traditional Hasawi styles, each has a name and more or less invariable shape. I made this body of work reproducing some of these styles and linking then with folk tales from the same era. The tales are written in Arabic as backgronds to the hennad hand images. old styles of henna |
