Faces of Minneapolis
I grew up where women were stripped of their power and forced to submit to patriarchy. I felt the injustice of that and rebelled against it, peacefully, by making art. When Target asked me to respond to the theme of “Healing” after the unrest that followed George Floyd murder, I thought of justice. The first step of healing our community is to restore justice.
This Mural represents women from five different ethnicity, each embodies a different form of healing. They have names but they are fictional characters. From left to write they are: The native Nichelle who is a cyclist and an environmentalist. Pang, a Hmong teacher writing the word "recuperate" in Hmong language. Breonna, the African American the aware citizen who roams the streets with her smart phone documenting injustices. Amal, the Arab American artist who inspire communities with her brush strokes. And finally, Shams, the Somali nurse who heals our bodies.
